can you quickly clarify: This sequence is the only way to exit the Sleep mode after the SWE has timeout? A local wake up signal on WAKE or a wake up on via CAN does not bring the device back to normal mode?

Can you repost the image? But to answer your question, a wake event will transition the device to Standby mode, even if the SWE timer is the reason for entering sleep mode. The difference is when transitioning from Sleep to Normal or Silent directly, then you have to follow the notes shown in the datasheet.
