SN65HVD72EVM: HVD72

Part Number: SN65HVD72EVM

Hi, I am investigating a case with  the HVD72 in question (if original), because not working properly on application.

I would appreciate confirmation if batch ID for the component I am interested in is genuine.

Initially, from end user I received a bit blurry picture with markings: 1136 HVD72 or T135 HVD72.

  • Hi Marek,

Unfortunately the trace code for this part is actually on the back (facing PCB) on this device - so I can't tell from just the top marking.

I do have a few questions:

    1) Is the IC having a problem or is an EVM not working?

    2) If it is the EVM having issues - where did they get the EVM?

I am asking because counterfeit EVM's are exceedingly rare - I have never seen one but I don't want to say never - but counterfeiting EVMs is generally not a thing.

    3) What kind of issues are they seeing that is causing problems?

Please let me know so I can look into this issue a bit deeper for you.

  • Hi Parker,

Thank you for getting back to me.

In the past we've had an issue with similar IC. Our PCBA manufacturer has sourced it from broker, this part was to be from TI competitor, but turned out to be counterfeit.

Lately, we have encountered similar behavior on the Inter face module that has TI IC. On BOM, we have alternatives allowed and it is very likely that TI part was used for the first time and the interface is acting similar to those we had when counterfeit part used. Hence first thought to make sure this part is genuine.

But there is a chance the TI part is perfectly alright and genuine, but for some reason (PCBA/SW design?) does not work as meant to be.

Our design Engineer is looking into it now.

  • Hi Marek,

Thanks for the background - I completely understand and most of the time the top picture of the IC is enough for a lot of our package types - but this one has the trace information on the bottom - so I look forward to hopefully see that.

If you can't get the bottom picture of the IC - if they have either the reel of the box it came in - it should have a label with the part and lot number so I should be able to trace it that way as well.

That being said - can you also describe the error being seen? I.e. do you have a scope shot of the devices data lines or an explanation of what is failing. This way I can tackle both the legitimacy issue and check for application/quality issues at the same time - so having a basic idea of what is going wrong would be very helpful.

  • Hi, Unfortunately, I do not have the PCBA on hand. I am in Poland, the part in question is in the US. I rely on limited information from field. PCBA is for Interface module. The team over there is testing keypads and those working intermittently.

Should I get the IC, I would get back to you. Thanks

  • Hi Marek,

No problem - and please don't feel any pressure from me - I understand the challenges of working on internationally spanning projects.

Just let me know when you are able to get the information and we can continue the discussion then.

    Best,
