TCA9509: Regarding need of Test conditions to validate this level translator.

Part Number: TCA9509
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCA9306

Hi Team,

I'm currently working on component qualification Test. TCA9509DGKR is the alternate of our primary part.

need to do some tests to validate this level translator.

can you please if there is any document apart from datasheet to test all electrical, static, dynamic characteristics of this level translator.

test cases:

Static Charateristics (Vih, Vil, Voh) validation, Ron measurement
Dynamic Charaterstics validation:
Switching time measurements
Input/Output signal frequency range validation
Multivoltage level translator validation
Application curve validation using communication interface (I2C, SMBUS etc.)

Request you to please suggest the test conditions for those above-mentioned parameters.

I couldn't able to find the test conditions in the datasheet.

  • Hi Bhuvaneshwari,

Static Charateristics (Vih, Vil, Voh) validation, Ron measurement

TCA9509 is an I2C bufffer. It only drives a logic LOW and does not drive the high logic signal. A pull-up resistor is required on the B-side, while A-side has an internal pull-up current source.

Therefore, spec like VOH is not listed since VOH is the output high logic signal that this device does not output since it only drives a LOW voltage.

VIL and VIH are specs listed in the recommended operating conditions in the datasheet. These are based off the I2C standard. The testing conditions for these measurements are to simply ramp voltage on the input until either a LOW signal is driven on the output (VIL) or the bus is released on the output (VIH).

    Dynamic Charaterstics validation:
    Switching time measurements

The switching time measurements can be found in section 7.7 of the datasheet. The test circuit is listed in figure 8-1.

    Input/Output signal frequency range validation

This device is an I2C buffer compatible with I2C speeds up to fast mode (0Hz to 400kHz).

Any frequency above 400kHz is not guaranteed by the datasheet.

    Multivoltage level translator validation

Voltage recommendations for VCCA and VCCB are found in section 7.3 of the datasheet.

The devices are designed to maintain the min and max voltage for VCCA and VCCB. Devices are tested at the min and max ratings.

Application curve validation using communication interface (I2C, SMBUS etc.)

TCA9509 is rated I2C compliant for fast mode speeds (0 to 400kHz). It has been designed and tested to meet the I2C standard for things like rise-time and bus capacitance.

  • Thanks Tyler,

Please kindly recommend a circuit design to perform those above-mentioned tests which you have followed to perform.

  • Bhuvaneshwari,

The test circuit to test the electrical characteristics in the datasheet is found in figure 8-1

All of the tests listed can be conducted using the circuit above.

    Regards,

    Tyler

  • Thanks a lot for your response.

Is there any Ron Measurement test condition for this I2C, SMBUS level translator.

since, I could not find the test case related to that in a datasheet.

  • Hi Bhuvaneshwari,

TCA9509 is an i2c bi-directional buffer. This device does not have a passive element separating the A-side from the B-side. It has active circuitry in the device with direction control, therefore Ron is not measured.

A device like the PCA9306 would have Ron measurements because this device is passive in nature with only a passFET separating the two sides from each other.

    Tyler

  • Thanks for your response Tyler

  • Bhuvaneshwari,

You're welcome! I will now close the thread if there are no additional questions.

    Regards,

    Tyler
