TCAN1044A-Q1: tcan1043 and tcan1044

Part Number: TCAN1044A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN1043A-Q1, TCAN1043

Our client encountered some non reproducible issues while using tcan1043A-Q1, and we are actively tracking and resolving this issue. But for the customer, they would like us to recommend a different chip. May I ask what is the difference between TCAN1044A-Q1 and TCAN1043A-Q1? What is the difference between A version and non A version?

  • Hi Ray,

Sorry to hear about the issue here. Please keep us updated so we can support once there is data to share.

The TCAN1043A is a 14-pin CAN transceiver that is on our most recent LBC-9 process node. This means that it offers our best cost structure and availability and highest data rate support for our CAN FD transceivers. By comparison, the TCAN1043 (non-A) is on an older process node that offers higher bus fault ratings (±70V). There are some minimal behavioral differences between these devices but they are otherwise pin compatible and easily swappable. Depending on the nature of the issue the customer is having, it is possible that switching to the non-A would resolve it but I would advise against switching back to the older device mainly on the grounds of cost and availability. We currently have a version of TCAN1043A in development that is behaviorally more similar to the TCAN1043 but still on the LBC-9 process. Depending on what we find in debug and the schedule of the project, this would be the preferable solution if a BOM change is needed.

The TCAN1044A is an 8-pin basic CAN transceiver that supports a different application case than the 14-pin devices which provide more system mode control capability. This would likely not be a suitable replacement for TCAN1043A. As a note the TCAN1044A is a spin of TCAN1044 with a simple ESD fix for the European market. Both TCAN1044 and TCAN1044A are on LBC-9 and have the same driver design, state machine, and datasheet parameters.

Let me know if you have any other questions in the meantime and when the customer has more to share on the issue they are experiencing with TCAN1043A.

    Regards,
    Eric Schott
