DP83822H: AM5728: Could not get PHY for ethernet@48484000: addr 0

Part Number: DP83822H
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM5728, , DP83822IF

Hi TI,

We use custom designed AM5728 board with MitySOM AM5728 SOM. We have PRU ICSS ethernet with DP83822.

Upon booting i got the following error.

Could not get PHY for ethernet@48484000: addr 0

Schematic diagram and bootlog is attached herewith. please check the issue and help us.

Thanks and regards

  • Hi Sandeep,

What is the desired PHY Address for the DP83822? The log message says addr 0 but the schematic shows the PHY strapped into PHY Address 0x1 (COL pin in Mode 3).

    Regards,

    Alvaro

  • Hi Alvaro,

We are using Two DP 83822 for our Ethernet connection. Desired phy address are phy0 and phy 1. In the schematic shown above, we removed R219 to make it to PHY 1. The other DP83822 has COL pin pull down with 2.2k resistance is R55( removed R57 and R56).

  • Hi Sandeep,

Understood, there are two PHYs with Addresses 0x0 & 0x1.

After the board finishes booting up and the kernel is ready, could you try the following command?

    dmesg | grep mdio

This will let us know if the driver was loaded correctly.

    Regards,

    Alvaro

  • Hi Alvaro,

At first we had issue with PRU2_MII1_RESET pin. We corrected the GPIO configuration and able to boot linux now.

Problem with the Ethernet PHY is still there. prueth pruss2_eth eth1: Link is Down message coming continously.

     [  661.602356] prueth pruss2_eth eth1: Link is Down

The "dmesg | grep mdio" command output i am getting is..

  • Hi Sandeep

    [    8.097667] davinci_mdio 4b2b2400.mdio: phy[1]: device 4b2b2400.mdio:01, driver unknown

These two lines are the ones I was looking for. It seems like the driver is not being recognized. This is a software issue, do we know if the driver file is included?

Within their SDK, it should be in the following folder of their SDK

    <Linux Version>/driver/net/phy/

    Regards,

    Alvaro

  • Hi Alvaro,

DP83822 driver file is inside /driver/net/phy/

The same SDK we are using with MitySOm AM572x IDK also. But in our design we changed "PRU2MII1RESETn" GPIO pin to GPIO 1_4, and modified uboot and kernel also. Same problems occurs in both the PHYs.

    Thanks and regards

    Sandeep S

  • Hi Sandeep,

In the same /driver/net/phy/ folder, can you check if there is a Makefile and Kconfig. Inside both of those files, is the DP83822 driver included?

    Regards,

    Alvaro

  • Hi Alvaro,

The problem is solved now. We removed the 165 ohm resistance connected in the TDP,TDM, RDP and RDM lines. Now the ping is working.

Now we are facing another problem. We are planned for RJ45 and SFP(fiber optic communication) using the PHY DP83822IRHBR. But in one forum I saw that this PHY didn't support 100 base FX communication. I need a PHY IC which can support both Copper and fiber communication. So which DP83822 series will support both Copper and fiber communication. I didn't get a clear picture by referring the datasheet and also DP83822 EVM in which DP83822IRHBR is using. Which has both fiber and copper interface assembled in the EVM. Please help me to clarify this doubt.

    Thanks and regards

    Sandeep S

  • Hi Sandeep,

I'm glad the initial issue is resolved. For the DP83822, the ones that have an 'F' in the part name will support fiber, e.g. DP83822IF & DP83822HF. The 'H' and 'I' describe the operating temperature, this can be seen in Section 5 of the data sheet.

The DP83822F can support both copper and fiber communication, but not at the same time. The MDI pins are the same for both applications, meaning the board cannot have both copper and fiber with a single DP83822 chip.

The EVM operates as described above, it can support both but not at the same time. If you want to use fiber, the traces to the copper transformer need to be disconnected, and vice versa.

Could you clarify a little more about the customer's requirement? The board has two DP8322s where eth0 can be set to copper and eth1 can be set to fiber. Is this what the customer wants? If so, there is no issue with this configuration.

    Regards,

    Alvaro

  • Hi Alvaro,

Thank you for the prompt support. Now we are using DP83822IRHBR. Now it's clear that it will not support Fiber optic communication (SFP). Our requirement is two ethernet PHYs, at a time both are using either as Copper RJ45 or SFP modules. So I will proceed with DP83822IFRHBR.

Is there any kernel or device tree  modifications to be done in yocto linux while DP83822 in the fiber mode ?

    Thanks and regards

    Sandeep S

  • Hi Sandeep,

If you are enabling Fiber via the PHY's hardware bootstraps, no change to the driver is necessary.

If you are configuring the PHY using the yocto linux driver, then yes you would need to configure it in the desired mode, whether it be copper or fiber.

    Regards,

    Alvaro

  • Hi Alvaro,

Thank you for your support.  I Will try with DP83822IF

    With regards

    Sandeep
