TUSB4041I-Q1: Lifetime impact of exceeding the recommended operating temperature for TUSB4041I-Q1

Part Number: TUSB4041I-Q1

Hello. We are designing testing equipment that requires a 1 to 4 USB High Speed hub. It might be subjected to operating temperatures that exceed the recommended conditions of most TI USB hubs (95C worst case).

Is there any data on how devices degrade when the ambient temperature rises past their recommended operating conditions? To clarify, we would like to know if exceeding those temperatures will immediately destroy the IC.

Mentioned TUSB4041I-Q1 would work well for us, besides the temperature range. We'd appreciate suggestions if there are any parts that would be a better fit.

Thanks,

Zbigniew Drozd

  • HI Zbigniew :

If temperature exceeds the recommended 85C operating temperature, functionally it may still work, but not guaranteed to pass USB3 compliance test.

Device will not get destroyed until temperature  exceed absolute temperature 125C.

All TI automobile hub can work up to 85C Ambient temperature.

  • Thanks for the quick reply. I have couple more questions:

    - Where does the 125C figure come from? Datasheet of TUSB4041I-Q1 specifies maximum junction temperature of 105C and maximum storage temperature of 150C. If there is a device with defined absolute maximum rating of 125C ambient I'd very much appreciate the part number.

    - What would not meeting USB3 compliance imply? Could it (for example) mean that a USB3 hub stops transferring data at SuperSpeed rates, while the 2.0 interface continues working?

  • Hi Zbigniew

From AEC 100 test spec, TUSB4041-Q! is grade 3 device.

For grade 3 device, it was tested with 125C for storage life. But since it's not  mentioned in datasheet, I will check again with system engineer.

    - for complaince test, there are many items for SSTX , SSRX test  for USB3 as well as USB2 compliance, but not sure which test may fail.  It could just failed those electrical tests ot could filed both electrical test and fucntional test.

  • Hi Zbigniew:

Just confirmed by product engineer, The absolute max temp at the junction is the absolute max for the process technology.

For the process technology of TUSB4041-Q1, The absolute max temp at the junction is 125C.
