TCAN1044A-Q1: Output capacitor and ESD selection considering speed rate

Part Number: TCAN1044A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN1044AV-Q1, ESD2CAN24-Q1

Hi,

Based on this figure, could please recommend the output capacitor and ESD selection? Will these be different when CAN speed rate is different?

  • Hello,

The split termination scheme improves electromagnetic (EM) emissions by filtering out higher-frequency common-mode noise on the differential signal lines. The capacitor value is usually 4.7 nF (can range from 4.7 nF to 100 nF). Note that this is a not a differential filter impacting the differential CAN signal directly, so it is not dependent on the CAN speed. (see section 2.2 in the user guide here).

ESD protection can be system dependent. For example, the TI EVM for the TCAN1044AV-Q1 only has a placeholder option for a ESD diode. However, the ESD2CAN24-Q1 is a recommendation if your system needs ESD protection.

  • Hi Amy,  I mean this partial ESD and Capacitor selection.

  • Hi Josh,

Oh thank you for clarifying (and for listening to my description of the termination capacitor).

Those capacitors are optional as used for bus filtering, our EVM's DNI them but recommend 20pF.
