DP83826I: Duplex strapping clarification

Part Number: DP83826I
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83826E

We are using the DP83826I in Basic mode, and without a pull-down strap on the Duplex pin (RXD0 / pin16) the device only advertises 10/100 HD. With a pull-down fitted it advertises all modes 10/100, HD/FD, as expected. This is different to the KSZ8081 device that it's supposed to be compatible with. The datasheet description isn't particularly clear on this for register 0 and 4.

Can you clarify if this is the expected operation, as our expectations were that the speed and duplex settings only affect forced mode operation rather than autonegotiation, and in any case we expected same operation as the KSZ8081. The System Rollover document for the DP83826E also implies that there is no change required.

  • Hello Mike,

I will need to bring this up with the team. Please expect a response early next week at worst due to US holiday on Friday.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome

  • Hi Mike,

After talking with the team, please allow us to state out our understanding.

Regarding strap pin, DP83826 not only affects manual configuration (Reg 0x0[8]), but also advertisements (Reg 0x4[8:5] depending on speed strapped). Meanwhile is KSZ8081, this strap only affects manual configuration. Our interpretation on this is that this gives more thorough configurability than KSZ8081 as this strap would essentially be a don't-care when auto-negotiation is on; rather we give this as more comprehensive functionality.

    Sincerely,
    Gerome
