P82B715: I2C cable extender

Please would you assist with a part selection that we are incorporating in a new design. It is for an I2C extender in a noisy industrial environment. Our current control board is I2C ready and we need to adjust a Digital potentiometer with a 256bit range of adjustment that is 5meters away. Vin is 5VDC and we don't need to use a sleep mode.

The I2C only needs to be one directional and at speeds of over 1kHz will be more than adequate. We are really looking the easiest setup option.

Please advise as to what we should consider using in our design.

The P82B715 allows you to use higher pull-up currents; this reduces the noise sensitivity somewhat.

You can remove high-frequency noise with low-pass filters; a low speed helps with this.

If your environment is very noisy, single-ended signals might be too sensitive. In that case, use the P82B96 and add differential transceivers (LVDS or RS-422), with a total eight lines.

Hi Louis,

Although a different protocol, there is a reference design using P82B96 as an i2c to CAN range extension reference design.
