USB-REDRIVER-EVM: USB 3.0 REDRIVER

Part Number: USB-REDRIVER-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB211A, TUSB522P

Hi,

What's the recommended position for USB Redriver ?

Close to host ? Close to device ?

Host to Device is 1 Meter distance

Please Suggest me to where I need to place ?

Regards

Pandian

  • Hi Pandian,

    Close to the connector.

If you are designing a USB device, then it would be as close to the host as possible by the USB connector on the device.

If you are designing a USB host, then it would be placed close to the device as possible by the USB connector.

  • Hi Nicholaus Malone,

    Thanks for your replay

We are using two boards in our project

    1.  Main board
    2. Slave Board

Main board having USB 3.0 typeA connector with PC interface.

The Slave board and main board interfacing with USB 3.0 using FPC cable with control impedance.

The interfacing FPC cable length of maximum 1meter.

Please see the attachment for your reference.

Could you please suggest me where I have to place the USB redriver?

Shall we place re driver for both a boards ?

    Regards

    Pandian

  • Hi Pandian,

I could give a better recommendation if I knew the loss on the boards, or the size of them.

This question is tagged as using the USB-REDRIVER-EVM.  It doesn't mention the USB redriver being used.  I assumed you were asking about the TUSB211A, which is on the USB-REDRIVER-EVM.  It is a USB 2.0 redriver, and does not help with USB 3.

What part are you planning on putting on your board and are you limited to using 1 redriver? The initial guess is to put a redriver on the main board.

  • Hi Nicholaus Malone,

    Thanks for quick reply.

The both Board dimensions are 9cm length x 6 cm width
We are planning to use USB 3.0 re driver ( TUSB522P) and USB 2.0 re driver (TUSB211A) for this board design and Communication between both board using Customized FPC cable with 1 meter.

Please see the updated image for your reference.( Plan 1 & Plan2)

Kindly help me out the placement of Re driver.

    1. where I can place the re driver for this board design to get the proper data transmit and receive?

    2. Can I place the re driver for main and slave board , If we place any signal loss ?

    3. I am using HUB 3.2 Gen1 5Gbps for slave board , the Re driver will be compatible for this hub

    Regards

    Pandian

  • Hi Pandian,

    1. The best place in this case is on the main board (Plan-2).  It would be best to measure the eye diagram produced by the two boards and ensure they pass USB electrical compliance.  It will also help to determine the correct settings for both devices.
    2. Sorry, I'm not sure of the question.  Placing the redriver doesn't correct for all signal loss, but it will help pass USB compliance.
    3. Redrivers are compatible with all USB devices, including hubs.
