[FAQ] Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Protection

Back to Interface Home Page

Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Protection

Highlights:

  • Protection needed for interfaces exposed to human contact
    • Pushbuttons
    • Keypads
    • Touchscreens
    • Any other points of frequent contact
  • Operating Voltage depends on voltage of data lines (typically 1.8-5V)
  • Capacitance is not a huge concern, < 30pF is generally sufficient
  • Multi-channel recommended for multiple I/Os for space-saving
  • High ESD rating desired to maximize protection from transients
