output waveform of HVD232 and HVD230

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD232, SN65HVD230

Hi,

Recently I observed a strange waveform when I tested SN65HVD232 and SN65HVD230 CAN BUS TRANSCEIVER. The test ckt is same for both HVD230 and HVD232, see below:

However, with same test condition, CAN bus waveform is quite different between two parts. The single ended (CANH/L to GND) output waveform from HVD230 seems very well, see below:

However, the output single ended waveform from HVD232 seems not so good, you can observed a very slow discharge time from dominant to receive:

My question is what make the two parts behaviour so differently? If there is something wrong?

Thanks,

  • Hi John,

while our CAN specialist is on travel I'll try to give you an interim answer. The HVD230 has a slew rate control option via pin8. Looking at your schematic you have configured the device for high-speed mode, hence the fast edges. The HVD232 does not have this feature and has only a slew rate somewhere in the middle of the HVD230 one.

In the HVD232 pin8 is not connected so there is no way to speed this device up.

If you need fast edges stay with the HVD230.

    Regards,

    Thomas.

  • Thomas,

Thank you for reply. However, we can find from data sheet that the slew rate of HVD232 in fact is same as HVD230 when its pin8 is grounded.
