SN65HVD30: MTBF Calculator

Part Number: SN65HVD30

Hi,

I've been using your MTBF calculator, as I need to calculate the MTTF for the PCB I am working on (I haven't come across a TI MTTF calculator). My problem is I don't understand why you quote MTBF instead of MTTF, as MTBF is for products that can be repaired, and you wouldn't repair an IC. Other manufacturers, Analog Devices for instance, quote MTTF figures for their products. Can I interpret TI's MTBF figures as MTTF values so that they can be combined with the other MTTF figures I have, to give an overall MTTF for my PCB?

MTBF and FIT Rate Estimator

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

  • Hi Matt,

I understand why this can be confusing - because it is - as every other IC manufacturer pretty much uses MTTF because as you said that is what is used for non-repairable systems and MTBF usually includes the repair time in the figure.

That being said our MTBF is not actually an MTBF as most engineers would understand it - it is eq. to other semiconductor companies  MTTF. MTTF is calculated through the fit rate:

MTTF = 1/(FIT * 10^(-9)) and MTBF(TI) = 1/(FIT*10^(-9)) - so our MTBF is eq. to MTTF as you understand it.

If you have any other questions I will see what I can do - I don't really know "why" we made that choice, but we did, for practical purposes it's still useful just a little confusing.
