DS90UB953-Q1: Power Over Coax

Part Number: DS90UB953-Q1

I want to use power over coax configuration in my system. At the system i have isolated two units. There is isolated DC-DC converter in deserializer circuit, and i dont want to use same ground with serializer. Serializer and deserializer products's grounds are different. For power connection how can i use power over coax configuration at this system? Can i use power over coax? I shared figure for block diagram below.

Thanks. Best Regards.

  • Hello,

Thank you for your question. Yes it is possible to use power over coax to power a serializer. This app note explains how power over coax can be implemented as well as some relevant system level considerations and limitations. You can also reference section 7.1 of the DS90UB953 datasheet for power over coax details.

  • Hi Darrah,

Thanks for your interest. I could not find case about my question in the document. I want to use power over coax for supplying camera system. But i have isolated condition between camera and CPU. There is no connection between them for current. If i use power over coax in my system, then how can i configure current path for my system?

Current goes from power source to the camera on the coax cable, but how current will come back to source if there is isolated GND? For example can i use another coax cable for current comes to the GND?

  • Hello,

To implement power over coax the ground will need to be shared. Using isolated grounds between the serializer and deserializer with power over coax has not been validated, and would need to be tested within your specific system. To implement isolated grounds between the serializer and deserializer, the recommended method would be to power each board with a separate power supply/ground. If isolation is needed between the camera and CPU, another option may be looking at isolating the signals between the deserializer and CPU.

  • Hello,

If i use same ground for serializer and deserializer in the system but different chasis for them, how can i provide current return path?

  • Hello,

In the power over coax implementation, the ground is shared over the coax cable. I'm not sure what you mean by using different chasis, but in standard systems additional return paths are not necessary for power over coax due to the ground and power source coming from the deserializer over the coax cable.
