DP83869HM: DP83869HM to MII Mode Setup per datasheet

Part Number: DP83869HM

Based on Section 7.4.5 of the DP83869HM datasheet "Steps to configure DP83869HM to MII Mode:", Step#2 mentions to write Chose the MDI Interface by writing to Reg 0x1DF = 0x60 (for Copper) or 0x62 (for Fiber).  That is essentially putting the part into a SGMII-to-RGMII Bridge Mode (1DFh, Bit 6 = 1h) and setting the RGMII_MII_SEL to MII (1DFh, Bit 5 = 1h).  Does that setting of the DP83869HM part into SGMII-to-RGMII Bridge Mode mean that it needs to have the SON, SOP, SIN and SIP pins connected (as shown in Datasheet, Figure 7-10)?

  • Hi Kevin,

It does not. It is most likely configuring the PHY to adjust its traditional mechanisms to work in MII to CU/FX mode, depending on use. I would advise trying this out on either EVM or custom board and if there are further queries, we can take up at a future point in time.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome
