TPD1S414: USBC 20V VBUS with 26V abs max. Which TVS should I use?

Tool/software:

I have a customer designing a high volume product with USBC, but only 5V VBUS (no PD). They would like to protect against the case of a non-compliant USBC cable that presents a hot 20V to the system. The downstream components have an absmax of 26V, and surge testing has shown spikes exceeding 26V.

My question:

TVS2200 is the one I normally think of first for USBC VBUS, but it doesnt clamp until beyond 26V so in this case it wont work.
TVS1800 seems to clamp near 20-21V, so I worry a hot 20Vdc cable would just burn this thing up.

you agree with those two statements? Is the TPD1S414 the best device for this condition?

Hi Brian,

The TPD1S514-1 would be the best device to use for this type of scenario. You can reference the following app note. It is for a source application but the same should be applicable for a sink application. The TVS2200 would be used in addition to the TPD1S514-1. They serve two different purposes. The TVS2200 is intended to clamp higher voltages for a shorter period of time where the TPD1S514 isolates the system from the high voltage even by opening its power path.

Adam - Expect John to reach out on this, but I would like to understand why the TPD1S414 cannot do this. It seems like a one chip solution to handle the 20V DC and the 26V surge.

The TPD1S514 is the follow on to the TPD1S414.

Reviewing the TPS1S514 again, this will likely meet the customers requirements as it has a clamping diode integrated in addition to the power switch.
