TSM36A: Comparison of ESD Protection Diodes and TVS Diodes in Texas Instruments' Interface Products

Part Number: TSM36A

Tool/software:

Hello,

In Texas Instruments' Interface -> Diodes category, there are ESD protection diodes and TVS diodes.
I believe the products within the ESD protection diodes category are also based on TVS diodes.
Similarly, products within TVS diodes can be utilized for ESD protection.
Is there a significant difference between these products that should be distinguished?

Best regards,
DDdoor

  • Hi DDoor,

The main difference between the devices in the ESD category and in the TVS category is the surge current rating. ESD devices have a lower surge current (IEC 61000-4-5) and we classify these as <12A. TVS devices will have higher surge current, >12V and are suited for surge events.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

    Best,

    McKenzie
