TUSB422: USB connection with phone, charger and microcontroller

Part Number: TUSB422
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5528

Tool/software:

I am looking for a very low-cost small-footprint way to connect a phone, charger and an MSP430 device (MSP430F5528). The microcontroller has a small back up battery and the board only requires a few mA to operate. The phone and/or the charger can be connected at the same time or either can be disconnected. Data rates are a few 10s of kb/s so USB 2.0  data rates are adequate

  1.   Is it possible to hard-wire them without any additional controller as in the attached diagram? Can it be done with the addition of  components such as diodes, or a load switch?
  2.  If a controller is needed for USB 2.0, what device is suitable? Is there a reference design or app-note?
  3. Is there a similar reference design for USB-C?

Thanks a lot

  • Hi Bernard:

Do you need one USBC connector instead of two micro-usb connector?

  • Hi Brian

    Thanks for the reply.

I have not yet decided on the USB connector type, but there will need to be two of them.

The application is for a medical device based on a TI AFE. In some applications the phone may be connected to the device and also need to be charged simultaneously.

(The part number in the thread title is arbitrary and is only mentioned because a part number is required)

    Thanks again

  • Hi Bernard:

Phone is OTG device and VBus can be either from the board or from the phone, but charge port always supply  Vbus . So you need to use separate VBus for phone connector  and charge connector.

If the charge port support BC1.2, then you need an usb2 device can support BC1.2 .

Our group  is mainly for USB2/3 redriver device  and CC controller.  You may need to submit another ticket with USB charger device  and  USB charge group may give you recommendation.
