TLK10232: SFI or 10GBASE-KR to 10GBASE-KX4 backplane Ethernet

Part Number: TLK10232

Tool/software:

Looking to use the TLK10232 in what appears to be the opposite way round compared with most documented configuration information, and would appreciate your advice on whether this is feasible:

  • High-speed side connects to a local on-board AMD/Xilinx Versal FPGA high speed serial transceiver - could run SFI or 10GBASE-KR
  • Low speed side connects to a backplane interface running 10GBASE-KX4 - the "other end" of the backplane could be a switch or NIC depending on the application

Is that a feasible setup?

If so, could you please share the lifecycle information for the TLK10232, under NDA if necessary?

Thanks,

Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

    I don't believe TLK10232 can support 10GBASE-KX4 to 10GBASE-KR or SFI.

    • In 10GBASE-KR mode, TLK10232 supports XAUI to 10G-KR. Although 10GBASE-KX4 and XAUI operate at the same data rates, there are some electrical differences between the two interfaces. We cannot guarantee performance with 10GBASE-KX4 because TLK10232 has not been tested with this interface.
    • In General Purpose SerDes mode, TLK10232 can support 4:1 serialization and deserialization with optional 8b/10b encoding and decoding. Note that 10G-KR specific protocols such as link training and auto-negotiation are not supported in this mode. Additionally, 10GBASE-KX4 to SFI cannot be supported because there is no 64b/66b encoding/decoding support in this mode.

I don't foresee TLK10232 becoming obsolete for at least the next few years.
