TUSB2E11: USB-UART or UART-UART

Part Number: TUSB2E11

Tool/software:

Hi team,

I have a customer with the below question. Let me know what you think and thanks in advance!

"Had a quick question regarding the TUSB2E11 eUSB repeater.

The datasheet mentions it has CTA-936 USB Carkit UART support which is a standard I'm not too familiar with.

My question is if the TUSB2E11 effectively acts as a USB-UART bridge in this mode or more of a simple UART-UART level shifter instead. Bridge functionality would be incredibly useful if that's the case.

 "

Marco

  • Hi Marco,

It is a 3.3V to 1.2V level shifter.

  • Hi Nicholaus,

Thanks for the clarity. I asked for an elaboration on the bridge function and got the following response, let me know if you have anything like this in your portfolio

"I suppose we're looking for a very small part that combines both:

    • USB-eUSB bridge
    • USB-UART bridge

This would be very helpful when communicating to our variety of MCUs/SOCs that support both eUSB and UART interfaces. The challenge is finding something in a similar sized package."

  • Hi Marco,

I don't believe TI or other vendors has a product that combines both.

Converting between USB and UART requires a software driver and a digital solution to convert between the two protocols.  It can be done with an MCU.

Converting between eUSB2 and USB is a physical layer change only and the eUSB2 specification defines how it should work.  eUSB2 is very similar to USB, and an eUSB2 repeater only has a small state machine and can't support interpreting USB 2.0 packets and converting them to UART signals.

    Regards,

    Nicholaus
