TCAN1044AV-Q1: CAN BUS open(one of CAN BUS), communication would be good or error on network?

Part Number: TCAN1044AV-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi CAN Team,

My customer is using TCAN1044AV-A1, TCAN1043A-Q1 and TCAN1463-Q1, and found frame error when one of CAN BUS was opened.

OEM is asking to check when one of CAN BUS(CANH or CANL) was opened(customer saying it Fault tolerant mode) in system, communication is normal or not. that has to keep normal operation condition but error frame was found while it tested,

Customer need to know TCAN1044AV-Q1, TCAN1043A-Q1 and TCAN1463-Q1 can support Fault tolerant mode operation or not, and how to resolve if it occurred.

Please let me have your feedback or let me know if you need more information to check.

  • Lenny,

Fault tolerant CAN is a specification for a different type of CAN transceiver that TI does not have, can you clarify this is what the customer needs? None of the listed transceivers support this specification.

That being said, the TCAN1043A-Q1 and TCAN1463-Q1 both have fault detection that can detect shorts on the bus, but neither can detect an open and report it. TCAN1044AV-Q1 cannot detect any fault on the bus.

  • Hi Eric,

    Thanks for your reply.

The customer is LG VS and SoP will start from DEC/2024.

All 3 devices didn’t support Fault tolerant mode, and also didn’t support CAN BUS open detection, but TCAN1043A-Q1 and TCAN1463-Q1 detect BUS short.

That means The communication frame error might be occurred without one of CAN bus line(open), and these all 3 devices didn’t support Fault tolerant mode. I can say to customer?

customer said, they’ve passed same test item at the last DV step but failed it PV step. That”s why they ar asking it.

  • Hi Lenny,

CAN bus might still work with only one line, but it's not supposed to. So it's expected that error frame might occur.

All those 3 devices don't have fault tolerant mode.

  • Hi Sean and Eric,

Datasheet of TCAN1043A-Q1 and TCAN1463-Q1 is saying +/-58V CAN bus Fault tolerant on the 1st page.

That means only for +/- 58V short fault tolerance? not means open of CAN bus?

  • Hi Lenny,

No, this is the absolute maximum rating for bus fault voltage. Exceeding this limit will cause permanent damage to the device.
