TCA6424A: Current Consumption Comparison

Expert 4736 points
Part Number: TCA6424A

Tool/software:

We have changed one 8 port i2c gpio expander TCA6408ARGTR o 24 port gpio expander TCA6424ARGJR. How much current increment should we expect?

All the gpios is set to output, either output high or low. Almost all of them are low except for a couple being set to output high.

the 1st 8 gpios (P0 to P7) of the 24 has the same usage of the original 8 GPIOs part. the rest of 16 GPIOs has additional usage, but for the working mode I need to know the current delta, they are all output low

  • Hi JDJ,

It is dependent on the load driven by the additional GPIO's. I need a better visual on what types of loads are being driven by the GPIO to determine how much extra current is being consumed.

  • understood. assuming all the additional 24 GPIOs all are output and all outputs low (0V), no matter what are those gpio's loads, no current draw. and also assuming the current 8 gpios are all output and all output 0 too. what will be the current consumption difference between this two GPIO expanders?

  • Hi JDJ,

We do not spec the device ICC when all outputs are output LOW and not loaded. So the rough estimate for both devices is in the 10's of uA per device. The TCA6424A would generally consume more current, but it would still be in the uA range.

If there were loading requirements, we could calculate a better idea of what the overall current consumption would look like.
