ETHERNET-SW: CAT 6A - 1000 Base T1

Hi Team,

We Would like to Use CAT6A Cable and Connector for 1000Base-T1 Ethernet interface.

As per the 1000Base-T1 standards it will transmit with bandwidth of 600 MHz and As per the Standards of CAT6A it is capable of 500MHz Bandwidth.

Can TI Confirm whether we can use CAT-6A Cable and Connector for 1000Base-T1 Ethernet Interface or it will be a issue in signal integrity?

    Hi Pavan,

    Which 1000Base-T1 TI part are you using?

    This is not something we have tested before, I’m not sure it would work.

    We test our single pair Ethernet parts (100/1000Base-T1) with single pair cables such as Leoni Dacar 647.

    We use Cat6 cables to test our standard Ethernet 1000Base-T parts, which require multiple pairs of cables.

    The Part No. which we are willing to Use is DP83TG720S-Q1

    Let me Explain my concern once again.

    We have Selected a  M12-X Coded Cable and Connector of CAT6A of 4 x 2 Pairs, each pair can able to transmit 2.5 Gbps according to datasheet.

    According to CAT 6A Specifications, any cable which comes under CAT6A can able to transmit  the bandwidth of only 500MHz.

    According to 1000Base-T1 Specifications, it will transmit with 600 MHz bandwidth

    Can TI Confirm whether we can use CAT-6A Cable and Connector for 1000Base-T1 Ethernet Interface or it will be a issue in signal integrity?

    Since, we are using 1 Gbps only which less than 1.5 Gbps of cable capability Can we neglect the bandwidth difference.

    Hi Pavan,

    Unfortunately we have not tested Standard Ethernet cables (1000Base-T) with our Single Pair Ethernet (1000Base-T1) devices, this is not a typical use case we see in the field.

    You will have to evaluate the performance of the 1000Base-T1 device and CAT6A cable on your own and make your own design decision based on whether or not your performance meets expectations.
