TUSB9261: About ATA Pass-Through

Hi team,

I would like to send original ATA commands to SSD, can I use pass-through?
I am aware that SCSI pass-through is supported and have tried sending commands via SCSI (SMART READ LOG, IDENTIFY DEVICE, etc.) but it is not working.

Yes, you should be able to use pass-through. Do you have a protocol trace or error information?

The customer replied as follows.
Could you please confirm this?

Since we have not specified any particular protocol, we assume that SCSI ATA Translation (SAT) is used when it is via SCSI.

This is the result of trying to send the IDENTIFY DEVICE command.
The CDB settings were as follows
unsigned char cdb[16] = { 0xEC, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00 };

The following response was obtained for the error information.
"ATA command failed, sense data: 70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 00 20 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00"

I do have an E2E issue that confirms it working in another setup. I'm reviewing this command information and seeing what the cause of the error could be.

Can you tell me the specific model of SSD?

Also, please describe the setup.

What operating system is being used? What software is being used to send USB commands? What OS driver is being used for the TUSB9261?

It looks like the customer is creating custom software to send USB commands to the TUSB9261. Typically, the OS driver handles these types of commands. Is it possible there is a bug?

The CDB command should be 16-bytes long as described in the issue.

I'm not aware of this 0xEC opcode. I believe it is a vendor-specific command, and I'm not sure the TUSB9261 can interpret it. What is the purpose of this CDB command?

16-byte ATA Pass through opcode is 0x85.

I asked this question because there was a command that caused a timeout error.
The information of the command is as follows.

The situation is that the command succeeds when only FEATURE takes another value (e.g. 51h) in the same PROTOCOL and COMMAND.

SCSI OpCode: A1h - ATA Pass-Through (12-bytes).

I'm surprised that this seems to work independent of how many bytes are passed. Have you checked to see if the number of bytes is related to the issue?

After reviewing the code, I believe the TUSB9261 will support any pass-through command. Do you have a method of testing the SSD on the Linux machine both with and without the TUSB9261? Running a comparative test like this can help narrow down the root cause.
