DS90UB941AS-Q1EVM: DSI interface question

Good afternoon,

You can find on the EVM User Guide schematic the DSI pin-outs and that the connector is "QSH-020-01-H-D-DP-A", which are seemingly compatible with HQCD, HQDP cables. 

Can you please tell us what connector is on the Raspberry Pi DSI output and how the 15 pin DSI layout is.

If not readily available, the Pi also has an HDMI output if you are aware of any HDMI to QSH adapter or cable. Thank you.

Since HDCI and DSI are different protocols, any such adapter would probably be another board with a converter device. It might be easier for you to reach out to the cable/connector vendor if they have a "breakout board" to connect the QSH cable and split the outputs, and then the other FFC/FPC connector could be connected as needed.

Also, just for your information, TI also has the DS90UB949-Q1 device, and EVM, which can connect HDMI directly if that is an option for you.

Ikram I appreciate that! Let me ask you, what is the fastest/easiest/cheapest method to generate a video signal for this evm? Is there an adapter for a pc that has this connector? Is there a video generator? What sort of setup do you at TI use?

In the lab, we use a DSI generator, although this would be an expensive option. Instead, for your case you could either build an adapter PCB (that converts 941AS EVM connector type, to the Raspberry Pi's connector type), or contact the connector vendor for any available options, or find an SoC with DSI output.

Ikram, good morning and thank you for the information. Putting the Raspberry Pi (and the DSI generator!) aside, are there any other widely available methods to generate the DSI video signal? Something that doesn't require a custom adapter and is relatively inexpensive? 

Hi Mike,

You can choose a DSI SoC and then build an adapter board to connect the SoC output to the 941AS input. Other than some generator we don't have any specific recommendations.

However, for initial testing, since you were about to use the Raspberry Pi, you could also just use the 941AS internal pattern generator. It will internally output test patterns that can be configured for your display, without any DSI input. You can either write the script manually, or just use ALP (the FPD-Link GUI) to configure this. Please let me know if I can assist.

This would not test the DSI features, but perhaps that's something you can test on your custom boards when you integrate the SER and SoC.
