Like any CAN FD transceiver, the delay compensation parameter is significantly dependent on the physical layout of the CAN bus and the passive components on the bus. Both of these will contribute to the overall delay of each bit transmitted, and the propagation must happen in the correct amount of time so that the total loop for the bit to travel along the CAN bus and back will need to happen within 70% of the bit time.
Typical cable delay is 5ns/m, the delay for the transceiver is listed in the datasheet, and other passive components will likely have a delay in their datasheets as well. The customer must calculate the total time it takes for one bit to travel the entire length of the bus and back, add delays from other components, and determine if this is enough time before the next bit is transmitted.
