TCAN3404-Q1: How to be compatible with 5V systems

Part Number: TCAN3404-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi team,

I promoted our TCAN3404-Q1 to our customer since their 5V power rail only supply CAN.

They want to know how this device be compatible with 5V system since other CAN node will run in 5V.

They told us that the system sample time will not be suitable for 3.3V because the 3.3V CAN has a faster transition time and it will cause error.

Regards,

Peter

  • Hi Peter,

Please note that 3 V CAN Transceivers are fully interoperable with 5 V CAN transceivers as CAN works based on the differential voltages of the bus. i.e. their differential voltage requirements are similar. For example, both 5 V and 3.3 V CAN devices will be dominant by a differential voltage greater that 900 mV and recessive by a voltage less than 500 mV.

Please help see CAN 5V and 3.3V CAN transceiver operate on the same bus together? and let us know more on the error concerns if any additional clarifications needed, thanks.

    Best Regards,

    Michael.
