TMUXHS4212: Is this compatible with USB 2.0?

Hi, I need to provide USB ports that can be switched off in HW for security reasons. We have previously used USB 2.0 ports with a TS3USB31 to achieve this. I am now swapping to USB 3.2. I cannot find an equivalent USB 3 1:1 switch, but have found several USB 3 mux devices like the TMUXHS4212, which I can leave with one side open (I am only using USB A ports, not C, so do not need to reverse the connections).

Can the TMUXHS4212 be used with the USB 2.0 data signals as well as the USB 3.x signals? Some mux's are explicit that they can be, but this does not mention it.

It would allow me to reduce the number of different parts on my board, and lowers the risk of obsolescence.

Hi Neil,

USB2.0 signaling uses up to 3.3V for communication, and the TMUXHS4212 unfortunately cannot support 3.3V signaling.

We do, however, have a mux that supports USB2.0 and USB3.0 signaling with different pins, the HD3SS6126: https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/hd3ss6126.pdf?ts=1734018687467&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Fproduct%252FHD3SS6126

Given, this mux can only support USB3.0 and not 10G, so if that is a design constraint, unfortunately I believe the only recommendation we would be able to make is to integrate both a USB2 mux and a USB3.2 mux into the design.

Thank-you for the quick reply and confirmation.

I realised as much over night, USB 2.0 would be ok at 0.4V, but of course USB 1.x wouldn't, and nor would the speed signalling.
