SPI and UART are different protocols.

If the OE is fixed, this looks correct for a half-duplex UART connection.

Yes, but half duplex. On a shared bus, only one device can transmit at the same time.

How should the RE and SHDN pins be programmed if shutdown mode is not required (this device is used in auto-orientation applications).

As shown in section 8.4, /SHDN must be high or open. /RE probably should be low.

Hi Allen,

As Clemens pointed out, this schematic looks like it's for UART implementation.

The THVD1406 looks like its set up correctly.

The device has auto-direction control so it is set up for a half duplex implementation has Clemens pointed out.
