TCA9517: TCA9517 frequency

Hi!

In my application I will use I2c as output from device for non-standard frequency 10 kHz in automotive application.

I want to use TCA9517 (or other I2C repeater) as protection against external transients.

Will it work? If not can you suggest better solution?

    The TCA9517 can work with any frequency. 10kHz is fine. 

    What external transients are you trying to protect against?

    I am not sure about level of external transients, but it is for automotive application.

    I am redesigning old module.

    Last version had only 100 Ohm series resistors even without TVS for external module , and still worked for 20 years.

    I want to introduce some recommended protection for I2C lines in automotive application.

    This sounds good. TCA9517-Q1 will provide buffering and some ESD protection 

    Keeping the 100 ohm series limiting resistor and adding some form of TVS protection diode would be good practice for an automotive application. 

    A protection diode for I2C applications that was recommended to me by our ESD apps team was the TPD2E2U06. I am not sure if there is an automotive equivalent, but this would be a good start when searching.

  • So what you suggest - use both resistor with TVS and TCA9517?

    Or just resistors with TVS is enough?

    Or just TCA9517?

    I just think that TCA9517 alone may be overkill for my application, but as I see it is designed to be endpoint for external I2C.

    Especially when my device is unpowered and so external leakage currents are blocked.

    These are all options of which you could include in a design to make it more robust. 

    If you want to make the design cheaper, you could always include the footprints for 100 ohm series resistors (use 0 ohm as substitute) and have footprints for TVS diodes. DNP the diode, but include on the schematic as an option. 

    I don't think series limiting resistors and TVS diodes paired with TCA9517 is always needed, but maybe for certain circumstances there is more ESD susceptibility to where these components would play an important role in protecting the system.
