Tool/software:

Hi Team,

I want to use DP83825 PHY in the project. want to know about IEEE 1588 Time stamping, is the IEEE 1588 Time stamping supported?

The PHY is categories as copper, so is fiber not supported and what is the difference between copper + fiber?

please refer to the below flow chart which is mentioned in the TI link: SSZT321 Technical article | TI.com (https://www.ti.com/document-viewer/lit/html/SSZT321)

Regards,

Harsha

  • Hi Harsha,

DP83825 does not support 1588 Time stamping, and only supports copper media connection.

Copper / fiber refers to the cable media that can be used with the PHY.

Copper PHYs are typically used with MDI lines connected to an RJ-45 header for copper ethernet cable connection.

Fiber PHYs are typically used with an SFP module to connect a fiber-optic cable between link partners.

Please let me know if I can clarify further.

    Thank you,

    Evan

  • Thanks, Evan, for quick check. I believe DP83825 does not support 1588 Hardware time stamping, will it still support for 1588 software Time stamping, I am new to 1588 protocol, may be your inputs will help us selecting the controller!

    Regards,

    Harsha

  • Hi Harsha,

DP83825 can still be used with controller supporting hardware/software time-stamping. This will allow for time-stamping / synchronization, but with some differences in latency performance.

I believe AM64x processor supports TSN / 1588 time stamping. For a more specific MCU/MPU recommendation, please open a new thread targeted at processor team, with details on your system requirements for a controller.

    Thank you,

    Evan
