DP83TG720S-Q1: Is it absolutely essential to place DC blocking caps on the TRD_M & TRD-P pins?

Part Number: DP83TG720S-Q1

Tool/software:

We have a fairly unusual requirement. On our new PCB we want to connect an off-board device to EITHER a USB port on a micro, or this PHY but there is only one single pair for real-world connection. In other words we will feed USB or Auto Ethernet signals to & from the PCB, and use a fast multiplexer C to route the differential pair accordingly. But space is extremely tight, to the extent that I wonder whether we can omit the DC blocking capacitors  into the PHY pins 13 & 12 without impairing or stopping the Auto Ethernet traffic?
