Hi All,

I have a question about the DP83867IS.

In the register below, is it best not to enable Robust Auto-MDIX if the connected PHY is performing automatic auto-negotiation?

For 1000Base, auto-negotiation is normally standard, so I think the Auto-MDIX setting should be set to Normal, but is my understanding correct?

Hi Ishiwata,

The Robust Auto-MDIX Setting should be used when either of the PHYs are in a forced speed mode. As long as both PHYs have auto-negotiation enabled, there would be no need to enable this function.

For example, is it possible that enabling Robust Auto-MDIX will cause auto-negotiation to fail in rare cases?

Hi Ishiwata,

No, Robust Auto MDIX can always be enabled and it will not cause Auto-negotiation to fail as long as both devices have auto-negotiation enabled.

Hi Ishiwata,

Functionally, both Robust and Normal Auto-MDIX are the same, the difference lies in the application. Robust Auto-MDIX helps resolve cable crossover in cases where either link partner is in a forced speed mode instead of auto-negotiation. Both modes still do the same function, check for cable crossover.
