DP83TG720S-Q1: Ethernet Phy for 100BASE-TX, 100BASE-T1, 1000BASE-T1

Part Number: DP83TG720S-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83TC812S-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi,

I am looking for ethernet Phy (automotive grade) with 100BASE-TX, 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1. I understand that 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1 both comes with standalone individual options. A single phy does not support 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1.

  1. Please add/correct to my above understanding.
  2. Is 1000BASE-T1 (DP83TG720S-Q1) compatible to 100BASE-T1 ?
  3. Also please share available options (automotive grade) supporting 100BASE-TX, 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1.

Thanks,

Nikunj

  • Hi Nikunj,

I understand that 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1 both comes with standalone individual options.

Yes, there are different PHY categories/families for 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1.

A single phy does not support 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1.

Yes, a single PHY model supports either 100BASE-T1 or 1000BASE-T1, but not both.

    Is 1000BASE-T1 (DP83TG720S-Q1) compatible to 100BASE-T1 ?

The DP83TG720S-Q1 is footprint-compatible with a number of different TI 100BASE-T1 PHY products, for example the DP83TC812S-Q1. Some BOM changes are required to accommodate pins that function differently, but the devices can be installed directly on the board in the same slot. For more details you can consult the Hardware Rollover Document posted on TI.com

Also please share available options (automotive grade) supporting 100BASE-TX, 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1.

I suggest using the TI.com product viewer to see all the options. Here is a link with filters applied for automotive grade (products with -Q1 suffix) and 100 or 1000BASE-T1 protocols: https://www.ti.com/interface/ethernet/phys/products.html#1323=1000BASE-T1%3B100BASE-T1&1498=Automotive&

  • Thank you Evan for sharing the details.

Just to double confirm, I am looking for a single PHY for my design supporting all three: 100BASE-TX, 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1. does such solution exist?

    1) If yes, can you please share the part details and references.

    2) If not, is it possible to add a switch and use two different PHY to support all three?

Sharing additional information for our requirement,

Below is high level diagram. We are targeting to use PHY device in Diagnostic device. Vehicle side DoIP interface can be 100BASE-TX or 100BASE-T1 or 1000BASE-T1. And to align this requirement we need to have support of all three categories.

    Thanks for your support,

    Nikunj

  • Hi Nikunj,

Just to double confirm, I am looking for a single PHY for my design supporting all three: 100BASE-TX, 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1. does such solution exist?

We don't have a product in our portfolio that can support all three of these protocols.

    2) If not, is it possible to add a switch and use two different PHY to support all three?

We have not tried using a switch to allow one set of data lines to interface with multiple PHYs so I can't comment about whether this is possible or practical. I'd like to note that the 100BASE-TX protocol has different physical and signaling characteristics from the -T1 protocols, for example by the use of two twisted pairs instead of one and a different DC isolation scheme, so it could be rather difficult to use a switch scheme to share a datapath between both -TX and -T1 protocols.
