TUSB321: Validating concept of Host charging using Configuration Channel Logic and Port Control with VCON

Part Number: TUSB321
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB320, TUSB320-LA-EVM

Tool/software:

Hello Support Team,

My name is Mihir. I am working as an Embedded Engineer at Aimtron Technologies.

Meanwhile, our team is working on developing a product for audio domain which has the facility of USB Hub for connecting more than one USB Device with the product and transmitting/receiving data simultaneously without any interruption. Along with that, the customer emerges the with new requirement in which, the up-stream port of USB Hub must charge the Host device (i.e., MacBook, iPad, Mobile) that is communicating with the up-stream port of product.

As we are new in this feature, we require to validate the concept and identified that is it feasible or not. We have done some research about it but still we have not able to identify any scheme which we can implement to accomplish the design.

Can we charge the device which is connected on up stream port of Hub using TUSB321 without PD IC/ Controller?

Therefore, we would like to ask that do you have any reference IC or scheme which can be implemented in our design. If you have, then let us inform so we can move towards the validation and development.

Regards,

Mihir

  • Hi Mihir,

Please have a look at the TUSB320 EVM. https://www.ti.com/tool/TUSB320-LA-EVM

This is our implementation of the part on a PCB. The schematic can be found in the users guide.

Yes you can charge a device while sending USB data to and from the USB host without a PD controller. However, the charging speed will be limited due to the lack of PD controller. The PD controller will allow for the fastest charging rates and most flexibility with the USB bus as you will be able to send data in alt. mode and different protocols as well.

  • Hello Vishesh,

    Thanks for sharing valuable information.

We go through you suggested TUSB320-LA-EVM user's guide and create connection base on our understating.(the image is pasted below).

Does we need change any connection for fulfill our requirement? Kindly share you valuable feedback.

Once the schematic is ready, we will share it with you for validation.

    Regards,

    Mihir

  • Hi Mihir,

This block diagram looks ok to me.

One thing to note is that the ID pin (trigger for Vbus switch) is an active low signal. You may need to use an inverter, or a active low Vbus switch.

  • Hello Vishesh,

Thanks for quick response and share valuable information.

We will use "TUSB320 " in our new design. Once schematic is ready we will share it you for validation via new ticket.

My all doubts are clear now. So, I am going to close this ticket if we need further information i will generate new ticket.

    Regards,

    Mihir
