DP83825I: ESD testing issue and recommendations

Part Number: DP83825I

Tool/software:

Hello,

my coworkers were recently tested ESD immunity of the board with DP83825 Ethernet PHY.

Despite some work on the protection, complete reliability was not achieved. Often PHY is losing link and not restoring it after discharge. When PHY registers are read back, they seem (only few important were tested) to be unchanged, which probably means that this is not a reset issue. Another observation: resetting (using physical RESET line, software-only reset was not tested) and reconfiguring PHY brings link back, so full power down/up cycle is not necessary to recover. Do you have any suggestions how to test it further or perhaps how to detect this unusual PHY state?

From my understanding DP83825, DP83826 and DP83822 belong to the same family but have different ESD immunity, in increasing order. Changing PHY to another one might be an option, what would be your stance on in?

  • Hello,

Can you please share your requirements for ESD? This would be the standard used, the level desired, and the behavior (Class A, B, C) desired at that level.

In general, the order of ESD performance for our DP8382x family is accurate.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome

  • This would be (from PN-EN-50121-4):

    - Electrostatic discharge +/- 6kV contact, +/- 8kV air, according to EN 61000-4-2, performance criteria B

    - for I/O ports: Fast transients +/- 2kV, 5/50 ns, 5 kHz, EN 61000-4-4, performance criteria A

    - for I/O ports: Surges 1,2/50 us, +/- 2 kV line to earth, +/- 1 kV line to line, EN 61000-4-4, performance criteria A

    - DC power ports (for PoE): Fast transients +/- 2kV, EN 61000-4-4, performance criteria A

    - DC power ports (for PoE): Surges 1,2 / 50 us, +/- 2 kV line to earth, +/- 1kV line to line, EN 61000-4-5, performance criteria B

Mostly electrostatic discharge and I/O ports would matter in this case and this particular problem was observed with fast transients test (it seems like immunity for surges is higher).

  • Hello,

Thank you for the information. I would recommend going with DP83822 for your use case.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome
