DP83TC811EVM: Trying to connect

Part Number: DP83TC811EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83TD510E, MSP430F5529, , DP83TC811

Tool/software:

I'm trying to connect to this eval board and do basic PHY register reads/writes, via USB. Downloaded the SIEP program and drivers from the TI page as recommended, but my laptop (Windows) either doesn't agree with the drivers or something else is going on, because even after manually installing the drivers it still doesn't recognize the COM port and I'm unable to communicate with the PHY. Can anyone help me understand what I'm doing wrong here? For the record, I've been using the USB-to-MDIO tool to connect to the DP83TD510E PHY and it works fine.

  • Hi Lexie,

The DP83TC811EVM requires firmware on the MSP430 to complete the USB-to-MDIO functionality that isn't flashed from the factory; the procedure for doing so is listed in Section 4 of the DP83TC811EVM User's Guide, and unfortunately you would need a separate MSP430F5529 Launchpad board in order to complete the flashing.

Is there a specific reason why you're interested in the DP83TC811 as a product? We generally recommend our newer PHYs like the DP83TC812 that are not only improved in performance but are easier to work with.

  • Hi Evan, thanks so much for your response. We have decided to move on from the DP83TC811, actually -- while we're here, would you mind letting me know what's needed to connect to the DP83TC812 if we were to order some? Will the USB-to-MDIO tool work just fine for this one or do we need separate hardware/Launchpad to work with it?

  • Hi Lexie,

The EVM for the DP83TC812 is the "DP83TC812EVM-MC" . Per its User Guide, the onboard MSP430 is already flashed with the USB-to-MDIO firmware, so you can configure the EVM by connecting it directly to your computer with a Micro-USB cable after setting up the drivers.

That EVM is a "media converter" design with some differences from the DP83TC811 EVM, so you can have a look at the description/block diagram in the User's Guide and see if it fits your needs. Let us know if you have any other questions.

    Best,
