TCAN1044A-Q1: TCAN1044A-Q1 CANL short to GND&CANH short to 12V test

Part Number: TCAN1044A-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi team,

Customer shorted CANL to GND, but found that communication is still possible.

And Customer shorted CANH to 12V battery, but found that communication is still possible.

We would like to understand why the system is still functioning under this condition.

Thanks

Xiaoxiang

  • Hi Xiaoxiang,

Communication is possible if CANH still toggles between recessive ~2.5 V and dominant ~3.5 V when CANL shorted to GND. Likewise, when CANH is pulled to 12 V, the device's common mode voltage tolerates the fault to detect transitions on CANL.

I.e., controllers can interpret functional communication based on the difference between CANH and CANL I.e., V_CANH - V_CANL, and communication continues as long as sufficient voltage difference is created or maintained by other nodes on the bus, thanks.

    Best Regards,

    Michael.
