TCA6416A: SDA of TCA6416A stuck low

Part Number: TCA6416A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAL6416,

Tool/software:

In the datasheet, there is a statement saying SDA might be stuck low. Could you provide more details for this situation?

In our design, VccP is 1.8V which is ramping up much later then VccI (3.3V).
During first power on, everything is good. However, if we do a power cycle, we observed SDA stuck low. Do you have any idea about this symptom?

  • Hi Chihta,

The stuck LOW condition has to deal with the PoR circuitry of this device. The issue is not always repeatable. It was found in a lab test that varying slews (making supply ramp rates faster) helped to alleviate the issue. Not much documentation is present on this issue because we plan to refresh this device in the future and therefore eliminate this line in the datasheet.

The best path forward is to either change the power sequence to follow the datasheet.

We also offer the TCAL6416 which doesn't have this requirement (this was fixed in the creation of TCAL die). TCAL6416 is p2p upgrade to TCA6416A as long as VCC <= 3.6V. It sounds like the TCAL6416 would work for your application.

  • Hi Tyler

Thanks for the reply. Besides making the ramp rate faster. Is there the other workaround? Can recover the failure by toggling the RESET# from H->L->H ?

Since we found higher failure rate currently and issue is repeatable at end customer side. We need to find a effective workaround to avoid the issue at customer side as the short term solution.

    Thanks

    Chihta

  • Hi Chihta,

Toggling /RESET should get SDA unstuck.
