TCAN1042-Q1: TCAN1042-Q1 was damaged during user use

Part Number: TCAN1042-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ESD2CAN24-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

The customer designed a CAN transceiver circuit using TCAN1042-Q1 and applied it to commercial vehicles (24V power supply system). The product has been mass-produced multiple times (the project started in 2018 and has produced over 8 million units). However, the customer received multiple market returns (with a mileage of around 10000 KM), all of which are related to TCAN1042-Q1 being damaged (mainly due to three phenomena: 1. VCC (PIN3) short circuit to ground, 2. CANH (PIN7) short circuit to ground, 3. CANL (PIN6) short circuit to ground).I have attached the TCAN1042-Q1 schematics. Please help to review it. Can you please help provide any suggestion that might cause this  issue? Thank you!

  • Hi Eric,

Issue seems to be most likely due to accumulated stress from exceeding the abs max ratings over time.

I would recommend replacing ESD diodes with a stronger automotive grade alternatives. You may also see ESD2CAN24-Q1.

I would further recommend protection on the 24 V to prevent reaching the 5 V rail and a small clamp diode on VCC against fast transients (can also add additional bypass caps) if the environment is harsh, prone to overvoltage, load dumps, jump starts or reverse battery while ensuring C4 is populated for proper split termination, thanks.

    Best Regards,

    Michael.
