DS90UB947-Q1: Grounding of twisted pair shields in FPD-Link III cable

Part Number: DS90UB947-Q1

Tool/software:

What is the recommended grounding practice for the shields in an FPD-Link III cable? Should the shields of the twisted pairs be connected to ground at both ends, at one end only, or not at all? The cable’s outer shield is already tightly connected to ground at both ends. Attached is a possible cable structure as an image.

  • Hi Timo,

    Welcome to the E2E forum!

There is not a recommendation for cable shielding as this is a system specific detail. FPD-Link is an AC coupled signal so it is not dependent on a ground reference sent from SER to DES. I have seen systems with both ends of the cable shield grounded at the respective PCBs and I have also seen systems with the cable shield ground separated from the PCB ground through capacitors to block DC current in case of ground offset.

    Best,

    Jack
