There is no active protection. For the AM26C31C and AM26C31I, the worst-case output short-circuit current (150 mA) is the same as the absolute maximum rating. For the AM26C31Q/M, it's larger (170 mA). So you have a problem if the temperature can be more than 85 °C.

Clemens is correct. The only protection there is comes from the natural current limit from a FET being in saturation. So the max current we guarantee is to clamp at is 170mA on the drivers. If the temperature of the device is high enough it could still damage the device during this situation. (No thermal shutdown circuit).
