TCA9416: MDIO level shifting

Part Number: TCA9416
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LSF0102, TXB0102

Tool/software:

Is TCA9416 suitable for MDIO level translation from 1.2 to 1.8V? I am a bit unclear if having edge accelerators will help or hurt there. This is on a pretty short and slow bus (1inch long, 1MHz max) with pretty well controlled impedance.

Alternatively what would you suggest we use that is small, and can handle voltages listed?

Ideally the same part could also be used on I2C buses in this design to shift 1.2 to 1.8 as well as 3.3 to 1.8V

  • Hi Igor,

The general architecture of the TCA9416 is a pass-through device with RTA and FTA edge accelerators for rising/falling edges. The device also has 10k PU resistors and is able to be used with open-drain and push-pull topologies. TCA9416 is also rated up to 1 MHz speeds.TCA9416 can level translate signals from 1.2 V to 1.8 V.

If a device without edge rate accelerators is needed, LSF0102 might be a good option, but this device is a pass-through and would require PU resistors.

TXB0102 might be a good option. It is an auto-bi-directional level translator and I believe has some buffering. VCCA = 1.2V, VCCB = 1.8V. I think MDIO could work with this device as well.

    Regards,

    Tyler
