ESD204: ESD204

Part Number: ESD204
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74AVC4T245, STRIKE

Tool/software:

I am working on a Space Product that needs ESD protection of the Giga bit Ethernet lines and a 3.3V UART port. The part must meet MIL-STD-461G Personnel Borne Electrostatic Discharge (level 1). Can you suggest any TI parts? Note level 1 is only +-2kV air discharge. Do you have ESD parts that meet NASA requirements for outgassing too? This is a question that is wider than the use of the ESD204. Suggest power supply lines for ESD protection too? Vin typ. is 28V with a max of 50V. Suggest 3.3V JTAG signals.  Does TI have a space grade buffer that takes a 2.5V I/O signal from a FPGA UART and converts it to 3.3V? something like a SN74AVC4T245.

Why does app notes say "Bidirectional ESD protection has to be applied to interfaces that operate with positive and negative voltage ranges". Say I have a 3.3V UART port, so the signal will only be from 0V to 3.3V. But an ESD event could be +2kV or -2kV. Would I not need a Bidirectional ESD?

  • Hi Buck,

We have plenty of options that can meet 2kV IEC ESD requirements like ESD204. I'm not familiar with NASA requirements, but we don't have any military/space grade devices in our portfolio. IfDoes your application require a standard rating for space/military grade applications?

Can you please make a seperate post for the SN74AVC device, I don't support those ICs.

ESD diodes can clamp negative ESD strikes regardless of their polarity.

Bidirectional diodes just have a symmetrical breakdown in both polarities, but an ESD strike of -2kV would be well above the -Vbr of a unidirectional/bidirectional diode. Unidirectional diodes will have a lower clamping voltage for negative ESD strikes due to the lower breakdown voltage.

    Regards,
