TCAN1164-Q1: Output current capability

Part Number: TCAN1164-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi,

The output current capability of TCAN1164-Q1 is given as 100mA. We have following queries regarding that:

1)Whether this 100mA current capability includes the CAN current as well (or) it is the current capability that can be provided externally i.e output current without considering CAN current?

2)What happens if we consume more current than 100mA?

  • Can you please give as a graph of output current vs voltage regulation? (if any)

Thanks,

Sri Viswa

  • Hi Sri

The 100mA is the LDO output capability even considering the CAN current, when the CAN bus is consuming its maximum current due to bus short fault, the LDO can still output 100mA.

If the load on the LDO exceeds 100mA, the VCCOUT may not remain within the 4.9V - 5.1V regulated output specification. The dropout specification is included for IL = 125mA. If the CAN transceiver is not consuming its maximum current, more current can be drawn from VCCOUT without loss of regulation. This means that a momentary maximum current draw of 110mA from VCCOUT is acceptable as long as there is not prolonged bus fault current, and when CAN communication is not being driven, but this should not be the nominal load of the system.

    Regards,
