DP83869HM: How to connect SMI at DP83869 Bridge mode.

Hi Team,

Please tell me how to connect SMI when DP83869 is used as Bridge mode.
The customer use the following connection.
Ethernet Switch DP83869(SGMII-to-RGMII Bridge mode) PHY

1) RGMII-to-SGMII Mode
The datasheet section 7.4.6.1 says,
"In Bridge mode, the DP83869HM SMI acts as follower mode to MAC."
I think that the DP83869 and PHY can be connected to the switch via the SMI common bus(Switch is master and DP83869 and PHY is follower).
Is my understanding correct?

2) SGMII-to-RGMII Mode
The datasheet section 7.4.6.2 says,
"In SGMII-to-RGMII Bridge mode, the DP83869 acts as RGMII MAC for the Ethernet PHY."
Does this mean that the SMI connection is only needed between the switch and the DP83869, and the SMI connection between the DP83869 and the RGMII is not needed?

Please tell me the correct way to connect the SMI in each bridge mode.

Hi Takahashi-san,

In both cases, if you would like to know the status or change configuration of the Ethernet PHY, connecting to SMI as a follower is recommended.

Do you mean that the DP83869 and Ethernet PHY can be connected as followers to the MAC(the Ethernet switch in this case) as a common bus in both case?

Yes, you are correct. In addition, the statement highlighted in your second question is not for SMI but for MAC to PHY interface.
