TSM36A: Hot-plug protection

Part Number: TSM36A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPSM33625, TVS3300, TSD36

Tool/software:

Hi All,

I found damage when I hot-plugged the TPSM33625 input.
The input voltage is 24V.

What effective countermeasures can I take?
Would a TVS be effective?

Please give me some advice.

Best Regards,
Ishiwata

  • Hi Ishiwata,

Do you expect to utilize the full input range of TPSM33625 from 3-36V? A TVS diode that can support a 36V working voltage will not be able to clamp soon enough to protect the 40V abs. max of TPSM33625.

If you do not expect to input over 33V, TVS3300 will be able to protect against surge events and clamp below 40V. If you plan to input 36V, the best option would be TSD36, but it may not fully protect the downstream buck converter.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

    Best,

    Chris

  • Hi Chris、

Thank you very much for your answer. It's very helpful.

I haven't checked the details yet, but I'd like to protect against hot swapping at 36V, 24V, and 12V.

At 24V or 12V, the TVS3300 would be effective.
At 36V, the TSD36 may be effective.

Is my understanding of the above correct?

By the way, is there a TVS that can protect against hot swapping of a 48V power line?

    Best Regards,
    Ishiwata

  • Hi Ishiwata,

Your understanding is correct. TVS3300 will be able to protect the device all the way up to a 33V hot swap. TSD36 may help with a 36V hotswap, but I cannot guarantee it because the clamping voltage is higher than 40V.

It is very hard to protect this device, as the operating voltage of the buck converter is 36V while the abs. max is 40V, leaving a very small window to clamp.

Texas Instruments does not have a device that can support 48V hotswap right now, but there should be other options on the market that can.

    Best,

    Chris
