And regarding USB ESD protection, is there any recommendation of ESD device for USB D+ and D-?

Hi Zoey,

For the D+/- lines we recommend ESD122 as a 2-channel option and ESD341 as a single-channel option. Both options will be able to support the data speeds of the lines and come in compact packages to save board space.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply. I see there is a typical application diagram in ESD431, which is using ESD341 and TOD1E05U06. May I know what's the difference between these two devices?

Hi Zoey,

TPD1E05U06 is a 5.5V device, while ESD341 is a 3.6V device.

TPD1E05U06 is seen in this diagram because the CEC, Utility, DDC, and Hotplug lines of HDMI operate at 5V.

And for ESD341 device, i will have two vias of D+ and D- from the top layer to bottom layer in my PCB layout.

Should vias need to be placed as close as the pad of ESD device? Is there any suggestions on layout?

Hi Zoey,

Best practice is to try and place the ESD device as close to the USB connector as possible, and try to have it placed before the via. Placing the ESD device on the opposite side of the board from the source of the strike can reduce the effectiveness of the protection.
