DP83561-SP: 'Repeater' or How to Use >5inch trace length?

Part Number: DP83561-SP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

I am investigating the DP83561-SP for an RMGII application in which I need to run a trace >5 inches. However, the datasheet for the devices states that this is not recommended, and I am looking for options on what can be done in order to satisfy my requirements. My questions are as follows:

1. Is it possible to use the DP83561-SP in a 'repeater' mode every 5 inches to account for performance?

2. Could I possibly utilize external buffers in order to increase the drive strength of the signal to go for longer distance? If so, what space devices would be recommended to complete this task?

Please let me know what further questions or information you can provide.

Thank you,

Filipe Rubinstein

  • Hi Filipe,

Is DP83561-SP a requirement here or would the customer be able to use DP83869?

    • DP83869 has RGMII-SGMII bridge mode which could work here. You could alternate between RGMII -> SGMII and SGMII -> RGMII to get a repeater-like effect

DP83561-SP only supports RGMII - Copper. You can connect the copper MDI of two PHYs through magnetic coupling to get an RGMII repeater. This would be similar to the diagram below:
