I am working on some ancient fw code and I am finding that the power on/boot loopback code. And I am wondering how important(required?) is it to execute loopback test at every power on/boot cycle?

Hi Marshall,
You do not need to perform a loopback test at every power on. Loopback tests are primarily for validating the MII/MAC interface before the design goes into mass production.
If the loopback test works, you do not need to keep doing it.
Best,
